Preparing for the DfE’s New School Estate Management Standards (SEMS)
The Department for Education’s 10-year Education Estates Strategy signals a significant shift in how schools and Multi-Academy Trusts will manage their estates.
The move towards greater consistency in estate management, alongside the gradual replacement of competitive capital funding with a more formula-based allocation model, means that trusts will need to demonstrate a clear understanding of the condition, performance and future investment needs of their estates.
As part of this approach, the School Estate Management Standards (SEMS) provide a framework for trusts to evidence good estate management. The DfE has also made clear its intention to standardise estate data collection through digital platforms, strengthening governance, improving transparency and supporting future funding decisions.
