Joining Warneford Consulting: A Vision for Sustainable Change

Reading Time: 2 minutes

By James Smurthwaite, Partner at Warneford Consulting

I’ve always been driven by the desire to make a meaningful impact on the built environment – particularly in how we design, operate, and retrofit our buildings to meet the challenges of climate change. Over the years, my journey through engineering, sustainability, and strategic consultancy has been shaped by a simple belief: we can, and must, do better for future generations.

Since graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2007, I’ve worked across a wide spectrum of the building services industry, from industrial cooling systems to heat pump adoption and corporate decarbonisation strategies. These experiences have given me a deep technical grounding and a clear sense of purpose: accelerating the shift to low carbon, energy-efficient solutions across the built environment.

My early career was hands-on, rooted in thermal systems and mechanical plant performance. But it was in 2013, working with M&E consultants on pioneering heat pump and heat recovery projects, that my focus sharpened on sustainability. Since then, I’ve worked with major manufacturers, advised global clients, and founded my own consultancy – Green Net Zero – to help organisations navigate the path to net zero.

Over time, I’ve developed a particular passion for supporting the education sector. Schools are more than buildings, they’re community hubs, learning environments, and future-shaping institutions. Helping them secure funding, improve energy performance, and reduce carbon emissions is not just technically rewarding; it feels vital. Through my work, I’ve seen firsthand how targeted retrofit interventions can enhance both the condition and sustainability of school estates, creating safer, more comfortable, and more responsible environments for students and staff alike.

My collaboration with Tim Warneford and the Warneford Consulting team has always been rooted in shared values. Our Journey to Decarbonisation reports are more than just technical documents, they’re strategic tools designed to empower senior leaders, governors, and trust boards to take confident, informed steps toward climate-aligned investment.

Now, as a Partner at Warneford Consulting, I’m excited to lead and expand our energy and carbon reduction services. My aim is to ensure we’re not just responding to change in the education sector, we’re helping to shape it. With new regulatory pressures, rising energy costs, and growing expectations around ESG, there’s a clear and urgent need for practical, fundable, and future-proof solutions.

Looking ahead, I want Warneford Consulting to be a catalyst for smarter, faster decarbonisation, particularly within schools and trusts. That means combining robust technical advice with a deep understanding of funding landscapes, stakeholder priorities, and long-term estate planning. It means supporting our clients not just in meeting their obligations, but in leading by example.

We’re entering a decade of critical change. I’m here to help schools navigate that transition with confidence, clarity, and purpose.
