Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls Flat and Pitched Roof Project
In 2022, the pitched roof at Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls was subject to leaks and posed a risk from slipped tiles.
The original clay tiles had been in-situ for over 100 years and the whole roof required renewing.
As a result of the type of roof and the geographical location of the school, a bat survey was required to ensure none were roosting before any work could begin.
Work Undertaken
Stripping any roof, even during a British summer’ involves a certain amount of risk, and doing so on the front elevation of such a prestigious school was not for the faint-hearted.
With the help of Warneford Consulting, the trust has enjoyed consistent success with its Condition Improvement Fund applications. This project was the second of three phases.
In collaboration with the trust, consultants, and contractors, Warnford Consulting devised a detailed phased programme of work. The schedule allowed the contractors sufficient time to undertake the works, taking into consideration exams and other building projects being undertaken across the school estate.
To minimise disruption to the school, construction took place during both out-of-hours and term time. Resources were increased by the contractor when needed, and the project was completed on time and as per the agreed phases.
Results
The school’s front elevation has been restored to its former glory and with the third and final phase at the rear of the school due for completion by 2024, the new roof will ensure that present and future cohorts will be safe, warm, and dry.
