Streetly Academy School, Structural Project
The sports hall – and only indoor sports facility – at Streetly Academy School has been designed and built with ‘low impact’ blockwork meaning that its use was limited to sports such as badminton.
Warneford Consulting undertook a range of structural surveys which confirmed that the blockwork was not fit for purpose for higher impact sports such as basketball, football, and netball.
Furthermore, the original installation had not been built to the expected standard, and Warneford Consulting discovered that the blockwork was structurally compromised.
Work Undertaken
Warneford Consulting successfully applied for the Condition Improvement Fund bid on behalf of Streetly Academy School.
The first phase of work involved reducing the height of the sports block by 75%, ensuring the space was safe and available for the sitting of summer exams.
Build timings were then dictated by the need for the school to have a fully functioning sports hall back in use by the start of the new autumn term.
Successful collaboration between the school, the contractors and Warneford Consulting, as well as early communication and planning meant that works were able to start in good time before the end of the summer term.
Results
To meet the tight deadline, an accelerated programme was designed and agreed upon, including out-of-hours working arrangements, which resulted in the reinstatement of the sports hall within the agreed timeframe.
The new sports hall now serves a wide range of sports activities, ensuring Streetly Academy School can provide a breadth of team sports and activities to its pupils.
