Warneford Consulting Achieves ISO 14001 Certification

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Warneford Consulting are delighted to announce that we have achieved ISO 14001 certification — the internationally recognised standard for Environmental Management Systems. This milestone completes a trilogy of certifications that together reflect who we are and how we work: ISO 9001 for quality, Carbon Literacy for climate knowledge, and now ISO 14001 for environmental responsibility.

For a consultancy that spends every working day helping schools and academy trusts reduce their environmental impact, achieving ISO 14001 is not just a badge — it is a statement of intent. We believe advisers should practise what they preach, and this certification provides independent verification that we do.

What ISO 14001 certification demonstrates

A Structured Approach to Environmental Management: Warneford Consulting now operates with a fully documented Environmental Management System (EMS), providing a clear framework for identifying, managing, and continually reducing our environmental impact across all areas of the business.

Measurable Commitment to Reducing Our Footprint: ISO 14001 requires us to set environmental objectives and track progress against them. Alongside our Corporate Greenhouse Gas Inventory — which has already demonstrated reductions in emissions intensity despite business growth — this gives us a robust, evidence-based picture of our own environmental performance.

Integration with Our Wider Sustainability Commitments: This certification does not sit in isolation. It builds directly on our Silver Carbon Literate Organisation status, achieved after Tim and James both completed certified Carbon Literacy training in 2025. The two frameworks reinforce one another — Carbon Literacy deepened our understanding of climate impact; ISO 14001 embeds that understanding into how we govern and operate the business.

Leadership and Compliance: ISO 14001 requires organisations to understand their legal and regulatory obligations relating to the environment and to demonstrate compliance. For a business advising on estates, energy, and decarbonisation, this rigour is not optional — it is essential.

Continuous Improvement: Like ISO 9001, ISO 14001 is built on the principle of continuous improvement. We do not simply meet a standard and move on. We use the framework to identify where we can do better — in how we travel, how we procure, how we advise, and how we measure our impact.

What this means for our clients

Schools and academy trusts are under increasing pressure to demonstrate their own environmental credentials — whether through PSHE obligations, net zero strategies, or the expectations of governors, parents, and the communities they serve. Working with a consultancy that holds ISO 14001, Carbon Literacy Silver, and ISO 9001 certification gives clients confidence that the advice they receive is grounded in genuine practice, not theory alone.

Our GEMZ platform will help trusts build the data infrastructure to support estate-level sustainability reporting. ISO 14001 strengthens that offer further, ensuring that the standards we encourage our clients to aspire to are standards we already hold ourselves.

Achieving ISO 14001 is a proud moment for the whole team. It marks the completion of a deliberate programme of investment in our own quality and environmental management — and signals the direction of travel for everything that follows.
