TES Podcast: Can the school crisis be fixed?
Tim Warneford was delighted to be asked to join the TES news team as they discuss the scale of the school building crisis on the Tes podcast. Schools and the Department of Education are waiting to hear whether their pleas have been heard for more funding when the Treasury releases its Annual Autumn Statement later this month.
In late August news of the RAAC crisis broke, and headlines of classrooms at the brink of collapse have dominated ever since. It’s reported that up to £15 million is needed to fix school buildings, some of which are also riddled with asbestos or prone to flooding.
Tim added his voice to the many challenges facing the school estate, analysing the true cost of bringing the estate to a fit-for-purpose condition, removing the compliance risks and preparing the ground for the journey towards decarbonisation. He is lobbying for a freeing up of the restrictions for trusts to access market support imposed by the Academy Handbook, which he argues is now out of date.
