SOLUTIONS

Practical, Proven Technologies for Smarter, Greener Schools

Once a school understands its energy performance and has a clear plan, then next step is implementation. That’s where our solutions come in.

At Warneford Consulting, we work with a network of trusted partners to help schools access high quality, carbon saving solutions, with the right level of support and funding behind them.

Our role is to act with your best interest at heart, ensuring the right solution is chosen, well designed, properly procured, and delivers on its promises.

We provide a vast catalogue of solutions to save energy and water, with the four main areas of impact being:

  • Lighting
  • Heating & Hot Water
  • Renewables
  • Controls

4 Key Solutions

Practical, Proven Technologies for Smarter, Greener Schools

Each one has a proven track record in educational scenarios, and can deliver meaningful cost and carbon savings, often from the first day they’re installed.

High Efficiency Lighting

Lighting upgrades are one of the simplest and most effective improvements a school can make. Replacing older fluorescent or halogen lighting with modern LED systems can reduce electricity and carbon use by up to 70%. These upgrades can even return their investment within the first year.

We can help you

  • Assess current lighting quality and efficiency
  • Specify high quality LED replacement solutions that suit your learning environment
  • Integrate daylight or occupancy sensors to maximise savings
  • Replace or design emergency lighting systems
  • Replacement lighting for zero capital through compliant operating lease options

Modern lighting also vastly improves internal environments, with better light levels, colour rendering and reduced flicker, making it a win for both sustainability and wellbeing.

Low Carbon Heating

Heating and hot water typically accounts for 60-80% of a schools energy use. Many sites rely on old gas or oil boilers that are inefficient, unreliable and carbon intensive.

We support the transition to lower carbon heating through options like:

  • Air or ground source heat pumps
  • Hybrid heat pump/gas systems (where full decarbonisation isn’t yet viable)
  • Upgraded heating controls including Boiler Optimisers and Smart Radiator Valves

Our assessments consider not just the equipment, but also the pipework, emitters, building fabric and control strategies to make lower carbon heating effective.

We’ll help you weigh up the pros and cons, build a sensible phased fabric first approach, and access capital through grant funding, or service models.

Solar PV and On-Site Renewables

Solar panels can significantly reduce your reliance on electricity supplied by the grid, cutting energy bills and reducing carbon. It’s also a very visible way of showing your school’s commitment to sustainability.

We offer support on:

  • Feasibility studies and yield analysis
  • DNO (Grid) checks
  • Funding options, including managed services and PPA’s
  • Procurement and installer selection
  • Metering and reporting
  • Resale of carbon credits to generate additional income

Battery storage is now also becoming a far more attractive prospect for schools. With the introduction of P415, there is a now a market that allows schools to trade electricity stored in batteries when market prices are high or low, creating new income or energy saving opportunities.

This is particularly beneficial to schools, as solar panels generate a large amount of electricity during unoccupied hours, and is often wasted, or sold back to the grid for a low fee.

Smart Controls and Monitoring

Controls are often overlooked, but they can deliver some of the biggest and fastest energy savings.

We help schools to implement:

  • Modern heating controls and zoning
  • Boiler optimisation systems
  • Building energy management systems (BEMS)
  • Remote monitoring, dynamic equipment control and fault alerts
  • Energy and water metering, dashboards and performance reporting

Even simple changes, like reducing heating set points, fixing timer schedules or zoning underused areas can deliver 10-20% savings, without major investment.

Where larger estates are involved, with multiple blocks or sites, we can help design scalable smart control strategies.

Working with the Right Delivery Partners

We maintain a network of carefully selected partners who understand the needs of schools and how to work within them. We’ve vetted their quality, pricing, service models and financial stability, so you don’t have to.

You’re still in control though, we help you review quotes, compare options, and make the best decision for your school or trust. In many cases we can even bundle improvements into a single, fully funded programme.

From early stage feasibility studies to delivery, we make sure each projects is designed and installed for long term benefit, not just short term savings.

Outcomes that Matter

Over the years have helped many schools:

  • Reduce energy bills by up to 40%
  • Cut carbon emissions by over 65%
  • Modernise end of life systems and improve reliability
  • Boost indoor comfort and lighting quality
  • Start their decarbonisation journey

No two schools are the same. Our goal is to find the right solutions for your buildings, budget and ambitions.

You might start with some quick wins. You might need to consider future proof options for a boiler replacement. You might want to bundle multiple interventions into a single funded programme. Whatever your route, we’re here to help give impartial and expert advice to find the right solution for you.
