CIF Case Study

The King’s School, Listed Building Pitched Roof Project

The Kings School is a Grade 1 listed building where Sir Isaac Newton was once schooled.

The school approached Warneford Consulting to help guide them through the CIF process in order to fund repairs on the prestigious music block which required a new roof covering and restoration of the pitched roof trusses.

The listed status required planning and conservation permission and like-for-like replacement with Colleyweston stone slate, which is very rare, expensive and time-consuming to install.

Furthermore, the number of contractors with the requisite skill and experience to install the specific slate tiles who met conservation officer approval was also highly limited.

Work Undertaken

One elevation of the music block ran along a public road and required careful planning and liaison with the council and highways agency for road closure and consequential pressures on time.

Due to the duration of the programme, much of the work was carried out in a ‘live environment’ while pupils were in school, sitting exams and rehearsing.

Excellent communication via the school, contractors, and Warneford Consulting meant that the installation took place – with all the associated health, safety, and safeguarding requirements being met – while the school continued with its day-to-day operations.

Results

With the final phase of the roof replacement programme complete, the project has delivered Kings School a safe, warm, and dry music block for present and future pupils that meets a contemporary standard as a teaching and learning environment.

It was a pleasure to work in close partnership with Tim to secure the vital funding and the safe and smooth delivery of this far from straightforward project. Sue Gordon, SBL
