St Gabriel’s High School Boiler, Pipework, distribution and emitter project

St Gabriel’s High School is one of the current MAT’s Nine school family.  The school was built in the 1950’s but has had further buildings added since. The trust recognised that the risk posed to a winter without heating, ranked as their number one condition priority.

The school’s existing aged and life expired heating and hot water system, including its pipework and cast-iron radiators, made it vulnerable to a disruption of service, leaks, poor performance and woeful energy efficiency. The lack of a functioning building management system made it challenging to control its output and by association its energy bills. Further challenges involved the existence of asbestos containing materials and its removal before the plant room cou Id be redesigned. 

Work undertaken

The trust, school, consultants, and contactors worked collaboratively to agree access to commence the works before the end of term. The plantroom components were renewed during the summer holiday and heating and hot water restored before the new term. Pipework and emitters were installed during subsequent half terms and during out of hours periods.

The results

The school, its staff and pupils were able to continue with all day-today operations whilst the works were undertaken. The project was completed within budget, time and met with industry best practice in terms of quality.

The energy efficient system has resulted in one that the school can control and as a result make sizable energy cost savings and reduce their carbon emissions. Staff and pupils are now benefitting from a fit for purpose teaching and learning environment and the school’s energy bills
will be much reduced along with it carbon emissions.

The transformation of the school’s classrooms has been fabulous. Greater control of our usage and the energy efficiency of the system itself has made for a warm and comfortable environment and we have also reduced our energy costs.Mr D Harrison, COO
